Greenberg and Mitchell (1982) see the contrast between drive theory and object relations as irreconcilable, reflecting fundamentally differing philosophical viewpoints. Schafer (1990) regrets the search for a ‘single master text for psychoanalysis’, and celebrates the battles and disputes within psychoanalysis, arguing that ‘sublimated aggression does have its uses’. No doubt psychodynamic factors affect the adoption of a pluralistic or sectarian position. The importance of theorists as well as their theories means that espousing or opposing a particular school of psychoanalysis – Kleinian or Kohutian, say – may reflect an individual’s unconscious responses to the gestalt presented by the leader.

Serves three masters and does what it can to bring their claims and demands into harmony with one another. . Its three tyrannical masters are the external world, the superego and the id’ (Freud 1933). The structural model cannot easily be superimposed on the topographical theory. The system unconscious and the id are equivalent, functioning according to primary process thinking, but the system conscious and the ego are not equivalent, since part of the ego may be unconscious. Equally, preconscious and superego cannot be equated.

In order not to be confused or contaminated with these, the British Psycho-Analytical Society has, with the Jungian analytical psychologists and selected psychoanalytic psychotherapy organisations, split off from the UKCP to form its own separate confederation – the British Confederation of Psychotherapists (BCP). Some organisations have remained in both. For Freud (1914b) the defining features of psychoanalysis as a treatment were the centrality of transference and resistance. But most psychoanalytic psychotherapists would also claim these were central to their work, and, conversely, there is no certainty that what is called psychoanalysis accords with Freud’s criteria.
