In our culture, as was stated, the impact of puberty results in the turbulence of adolescence. The way in which the young person handles this depends on his capacity, upon circumstances including his social environment, upon chance happenings such as health, brief or prolonged physical illness, academic success or failure which might itself result in his being moved or moving to quite a different social environment and his response to the cultural impact of that milieu. For example, when a bright young man from a working-class home is accepted for Oxford or Cambridge, goes to live away from his home and meets a group of very bright people, altogether unexpected stresses and rewards are to be found.

Jane pretends to ignore her and Mandy switches to another tack. ‘I had the biggest pudding___Mummy said I could . . ’ This time, Jane lashes out with an angry kick at Mandy, and gets up to leave the table. Mother says ‘sit down and eat your meal’. ’ Mother gives Mr Hardy a look clearly demanding action. He looks extremely uncomfortable but avoids her gaze. Jane does not obey her mother but puts a record on. Mr Hardy looks at his wife and says defeatedly, ‘Oh, leave her alone . . it’s Sunday. ’ Mrs Hardy responds angrily with the retort that it might be peace for him, but not for her.

And, prior to this, he may already have had to make adjustments to a sudden increase in height of four or five inches even before puberty, or, at the opposite end of the scale, to remaining undersized until a spurt of growth around the age of eighteen. Confusing matters further, the onset of puberty, associated by most people with the start of menstruation in girls and the first seminal emissions in boys, may not necessarily develop in parallel with any physical growth in either sex. Girls, for example, whose menstruation has not commenced until after seventeen or eighteen, may be taller than those who start much sooner.
