Juan, a patient of one of us (UO), had developed a severe clinical depression and continuously tortured his wife with his feelings of guilt and unworthiness because he had been going with prostitutes repeatedly during the first years of their marriage. His wife had long forgiven him his ‘sins’; she was not even terribly concerned about this fact. Furthermore, she herself never was much interested in sex, and the couple slept in different rooms. With his depression, the patient was now taking his revenge for all those years with only sporadic intercourse.

They want to be better. In order to stop feeling inferior they need to feel superior and have – real or imaginary – power over others. We call this ‘overcompensation’, because its purpose is not to match others, but to be more than they are. To overcome inferiority, these people apply ‘useless’ means. ‘Useless’ does not mean ‘in vain’, since discouraged individuals usually really manage to feel superior, at least for some time. But in the Adlerian view, these people’s efforts are useless for the community and ultimately for themselves, because they gravitate to the ‘wasting side of life’.

Nevertheless, differences in neurotic manifestations between men and women can still be observed. Due to the differences in sex roles, aggressive behaviour and striving for power are still more tolerated in men than in women.
