The wind continued to build and was too much even for the storm jib, so we peeled to the storm staysail, maintaining our course and 10–11 knots. The wind strengthened to 70 knots for a period of two hours with gusts to 75 or 80 knots. Fifteen per cent of the surface was breaking and the wind was blowing the top off every wave. As a result there were long streaks of wind-blown water joining one crest to the next. The sea looked as if it was covered in a layer of smoke. Wavelength was about 100m (330ft) and the waves were not long-crested as one might expect, but diamond-shaped.

The wind was now gusting over the maximum of 60 knots shown by our Brookes & Gatehouse wind speed indicator. By this stage I had no choice but to bring in the headsail and run under bare poles. In these conditions the boat was still making 5 to 6 knots, but the motion was relatively comfortable and the Hydrovane self-steering was able to keep our course with the wind 15 to 20° off our port quarter.
